Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Recruitment Process Like?

Recruitment lasts for two weeks at the beginning of the semester. We have around 4-5 various events, like craft night and jeopardy,  that you can come to and express your interest in A.O.E.. You do not have to come to every event but it’s encouraged to come and get to know everyone! If you can not make it to any of the events, please let us know and we can meet with you to talk about any questions you may have.

What are your major requirements?

We accept all majors but we primarily cater our events and activities to STEM.

What makes us different from the normal rushing process?

We host recruitment events over a 2 week period typically every couple of days (Formal is 1 week everyday).

Our events are typically 1 to 2 hours long (Formal contains up to 5 hour nights and all day events).

We host fun events like craft night, jeopardy, and movie nights in order for you to be able to bond with the sorority and learn what we value (Formal hosts events were you are told what each sorority values over a scheduled process).

You guide the process! We want you to be just as excited to join us as we are to have you join (Formal you must participate in every event, choose what you like, and be chosen by the sororities as well).

What if I cannot attend a recruitment event?

You only have to attend one recruitment event to be considered for a bid from us but the more you attend the more you are likely to get a bid! If you cannot make an event and are still interested in joining please email us and let us know.

What are Dues Like?

During the candidate process you pay as you go. When Active dues are determined by the budget the chapter puts together at the beginning of the semester. Dues are typically between $200 and $400 dollars each semester. The budget consists of all expected costs each committee intends to need for their events. The budget is compiled and then evenly split by the number of active members. It is your duty to work with the treasurer each semester to workout a payment plan otherwise we pay half dues at midterms and the other half before finals.

What are the requirements to become a candidate?

You must be an undergraduate student at Marquette University with a cumulative G.P.A above a 2.0. You do not need to be an engineering or technical science major, but you should support those fields and our values.

How much time commitment is candidacy?

Candidacy is a six week process starting at the end of recruitment. It consists of weekly meetings, individual and group projects, individual meetings with actives, and a full final week of events. Expect to dedicate between 2 to 15 hours a week to this process.

Do I need to be a specific major to join A.O.E?

Our values were created to support people in engineering and technical science majors. However, we accept all majors at Marquette University.

Can I join A.O.E if I am in the process of rushing a social sorority?

You may join A.O.E if you participate in formal rush. However you may only join A.O.E if you attend our recruitment events, receive a bid from A.O.E and DO NOT accept bids from any of the sororities in the formal rushing process.

Am I eligible to join if I am a Masters or PhD student?

Unfortunately we are only able to accept undergraduate students at this time.

When can I wear Letters?

When you are initiated as an Active member after the candidacy process.

What kind advantages come with joining a professional sorority?

We base our values on professionalism and preparing our members for careers in engineering and technical science. Every semester we plan and participate in professional events like speakers, company tours, and study hours. You will also meet older members who have taken your classes and be able to help guide you in your studies. A.O.E also allows you to become closer to more people in your field, while creating lifelong friendships.

What kind of Events does the sorority do?

Our events are based off of A.O.E’s 3 pillars, Sisterhood, Philanthropy, and Professionalism. Every semester is a combination of sisterhood bonding, philanthropic fundraisers, volunteering, professional events, speakers, and recruitment events.
